The series of talks aims to create a space for encounter and exchange. A space that speaks of solidarity and empathy.
Over four evenings, we will talk about different ways of living in resistance, community and attitude, both today and in the past.
In the last part of the series, we will talk to an opponent of the SED regime.
In current political debates, eastern Germany, the former GDR, is primarily associated with the rise of right-wing extremist forces.
The discourse in this regard is strongly influenced by a ‘West German perspective’ and is also predominantly conducted by people socialised in West Germany about ‘the East Germans’.
The media and history are dominated by images of decay and desolation – or images of liberation through the fall of the Berlin Wall and the waving of black, red and gold flags for reunification.
The voices of opposition figures from the GDR are not heard.
Yet it is precisely these people from whom we can and should learn today. They carried out political work under the repression of the SED regime, organised non-violent resistance and often experienced disillusionment due to the social coldness of West German capitalism.
Conny is one of these opposition figures. She was active in various opposition groups and witnessed how, at the end of the 1980s, more and more people found the courage to take to the streets for freedom of expression and democracy, men in suits and uniforms lost their power, a better tomorrow became possible, and after 1989 everything turned out differently after all.
In conversation with Conny, we discuss her unwavering belief in social change, creative forms of protest that bypass state repression, and why she never left the GDR.
