"The true fast resides in rejecting evil, in guarding the tongue, in suppressing hatred, in banishing lust, evil words, lying, and breaking vows."

1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicaea:
Celebrating the Foundations of Christian Unity and Faith

Today, May 20, 2025, the universal Church commemorates the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaeaβ€”a defining moment in Christian history. Convened in 325 A.D. by Emperor Constantine in the city of Nicaea (modern-day Δ°znik, Turkey), this was the first ecumenical council of the Church, bringing together over 300 bishops from across the Christian world to defend and clarify the faith in the face of growing heresies.

At the heart of the council was the challenge posed by Arianism, which denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. In response, the bishops, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, solemnly declared that Jesus Christ is β€œGod from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father.” This profession of faith, now known as the Nicene Creed, continues to be proclaimed by Christians throughout the world.
Although Pope St. Sylvester I did not attend the council in person, he exercised his authority by sending two legates who played a key role in guiding the deliberations. This affirmed the unique and foundational role of the Bishop of Rome, the successor of St. Peter, in preserving the unity and orthodoxy of the Church. The pope’s involvement highlighted the essential principle that the Church is apostolic and guided by the Petrine ministryβ€”a principle that would be confirmed and deepened in later councils.

The Council of Nicaea also established the method for determining the date of Easter and set a precedent for future ecumenical councils to safeguard the true faith. It stands as a lasting symbol of the Church’s mission: to remain united in truth, grounded in apostolic tradition, and led by the pope as the visible sign of communion.

Its legacy continues to shape the doctrine, worship, and identity of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, as well as many Protestant communities.

As we celebrate this 1700th anniversary during the Jubilee Year 2025, the Church invites all the faithful to renew their commitment to the Nicene faith, to pray for Christian unity, and to stand firm in the truth handed down from the apostles.
