🇷🇺🇺🇸On December 3, 2025 Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States Alexander N. Darchiev opened the exhibition “Restoring the Memory of War Heroes” at the Russian Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. The exhibition is dedicated to the Soviet-American military alliance during World War II.
🔹Timed to coincide with Russia’s Day of the Unknown Soldier, the display features unique materials collected during expeditions organized by the “People of the Sea” Foundation with support from the engineering company “Fertoing” and under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society. The exhibits focus on the legendary ALSIB (Alaska–Siberia) air route used to ferry American combat aircraft from Alaska to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program.
🔹Visitors showed particular interest in artifacts from the legendary U.S. Navy submarine “USS Wahoo”, which inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese fleet before being sunk in 1943 in the La Pérouse Strait. In May 2024, expedition members who carried out a deep-water dive placed a commemorative plaque on the submarine’s hull at the wreck site. In the near future, a capsule containing water and seabed soil, along with expedition video footage and a model of the submarine, will be handed over to the American side.
🔹Visitors also examined models of the C-47 Douglas and PV-1 Ventura aircraft that crashed near Kamchatka while evading pursuit by Japanese fighters.
🔹As Ambassador Darchiev emphasized, the initiative of Russian researchers and enthusiasts serves the noble purpose of preserving the historical truth about the brotherhood-in-arms between our two countries in the defeat of Nazi Germany and militarist Japan. It is also a reminder that Russia and the United States can and must cooperate as great powers bearing special responsibility for the fate of the world.
🔹The exhibition will remain open to the public at the Russian Cultural Center on December 4 and 5.
