در سال ۱۸۵۴، کارل فردریش گاوس هفتاد ساله که بزرگترین ریاضی دان زمان خود شناخته میشد، برنهارد ریمان ۲۷ ساله را برای ایراد سخنرانی در دانشگاه گوتینگن آماده کرد تا در صورت موافقت مسوولین دانشگاه، در آنجا استخدام شود. ریمان شاگرد گاوس در گوتینگن بود و رساله دکتری خود را با راهنمایی گاوس به پایان برده بود. موضوعی که گاوس به طور اختصاصی به ریمان پیشنهاد داده بود در مورد خمیدگی فضا بود. ریمان استاد خود را مایوس نکرد. سخنرانی ریمان که دو سال پس از مرگش به صورت مقاله چاپ شد به عنوان یکی از مهمترین مقالات هندسه در تاریخ شناخته میشود. معمولا گاوس در تمجید از سایر ریاضی‌دانان ذکر میکرد که "خودش هم کار مشابه ای سالها قبل انجام داده است". این بار گاوس حیرت زده فقط عمق کار ریمان را به دوستانش گوشزد کرد.
