«شادی، ای جرقه‌ی خدایان! ای دختر بهشت…»
شیلر، متاثر از روح انقلاب فرانسه، برابری انسان‌ها و فروپاشی مرزهای نابرابری را آرمان خود می‌دانست. شعرش، ستایش انسانیتِ رها شده از زنجیر است. بتهوون که خود شخصیتی شورشی و آزادی‌خواه بود، در ۱۸۲۴ این شعر را در واپسین سمفونی‌اش به اوج موسیقایی رساند. گفته بود: «آزادی، نام حقیقی این قطعه است، حتی اگر در نت‌ها نباشد.»
