If UK National ID was linked to such records, the results could have been catastrophic for the wider public.

We've got a message for you Pat McFadden.
You will fail to introduce National ID in Britain.
You must respect the Identity Documents Act [2010] that repealed the Identity Cards Act [2006]
Britain is absolutely nowhere near ready to have an Estonia type system.
And as for Estonia's e-ID that's been in place since 2002, it hasn't been without serious security vulnerabilities let alone cyberattacks over the years.

✊ There you have it. If we have a critical mass of non-compliance, just as we did with Blair's last push in the 2000's, Starmer will also fail.

ID cards are not British. They do not reflect our values of privacy, personal freedom, and they have never been part of the cultural fabric of this country.
They shred privacy, invite surveillance, and create nightmarish risks in the event of data breaches or misuse.
ID cards have no place in Britain and never will. They must be rejected at all costs.

If Estonia's much lauded National ID system has suffered notable security vulnerabilities, cyberattacks and other fraud, then there's no absolutely no way that this could work efficiently in modern day data-breach Britain.
None of these systems are impenetrable. The UK would basically need an unhackable system.
According to the GOV.UK Cyber Security Breach Survey [CSBS] report for 2024, there were 7.78m cybercrimes across the UK.
Charities saw 924,000 incidents bringing the combined total to 8.7m.
The 2023 report was 3.2m suggesting things are getting worse, not better.

India's Aadhaar system is incompatible with British society and its values, nor should these systems form the 'basis' for anyone to live.
States will always present them as successful and inclusive, but the reality is they're a great security risk and give governments far too much power.

Oversimplification and public relations hype.
This is like calling the iPhone 17 the first smartphone because it added a new feature.
Veterans were already digitally 'verified' through MoD records and today's launch is about softening the public towards the GOV.UK wallet.
And it should be noted, the MoD are not the best example of data security for the forces considering their incompetence throughout the years with high profile databreaches.
Lest we forget that its most recent databreach concerning the Afghan resettlement scheme is set to cost the UK taxpayer at least £850m.
