Just finished reading Selamlik. Absolutely majestic.
Today, having reached safety, we all sat together and shared the reasons we had for choosing Sweden as our adopted country. I envy you. All of you have absolute freedom to respond to this question—all except me.
I came here to be accepted, not tolerated. To live in a society that respects me for who I am and does not judge me for what I do in the privacy of my bedroom. My wish is very simple: not a large apartment for my kids, or a place at university, or even a well-paid job. I came here looking for love. I don’t ask you to celebrate my being gay. All I want is respect for who I am—the same respect I earned from you for helping you translate your letters. Even if you aren’t gay yourself, remember that your children might be. Choose to love them. Remember this and remember me.
