Ч. представляли в образе пузатой рыжей крысы "с лицом вроде человеческого". Он вселяется в дома по воле злых колдунов, тушит огонь в очаге, требуя выкуп зерном ("все в амбарах поберет, из сусеков заметет") и животными ("что мычит и блеет, квохчет и лает, корову и собаку — гони в буераки, курку и козлищу — ко мне в логовище"), но не потому, что хочет есть, а затем, чтобы заставить людей голодать. "Не ест он ни жита, ни мяса, не пьет ни пива, ни кваса, а питается людской бедою". Ч. сначала поселяется в одной избе, но если его не выжить, может "цельную волость запустошить".
