Как выяснилось, организатор преступления получил информацию о маршруте и сумме перевозки от знакомого дальнобойщика. Он нанял сообщников, пообещав им миллион рублей за участие. Среди задержанных оказался гражданин Украины, незаконно находившийся на территории России.
Нападение произошло во время стоянки: один из злоумышленников отвлёк водителя разговором, а второй нанёс ему удар ножом и забрал сумку с деньгами. Однако скрыться преступникам не удалось — их задержали в Михайловском районе, а похищенные средства изъяли.
