Los indicadores indirectos nos permiten conocer los cambios climáticos anteriores a los termómetros, y no muestran un calentamiento reciente tan grande como los registros termométricos.
En un estudio en la revista Dendrochronologia, 22 autores de 9 países analizan el clima del hemisferio norte entre los años 1-2010utilizando más de 16.000 árboles. Los datos muestran la anomalía de temperatura en verano en grados (rojo y naranja). Los autores comparan estos datos con los registros termométricos desde 1900 (azul). Lo interesante es que, para los árboles, los veranos de hoy en día no son más cálidos que los de hace 1.000 años.
Esto sucede también con otros indicadores indirectos, revelando un conflicto sin resolver entre distintos tipos de datos con respecto a la magnitud del calentamiento actual. El IPCC defiende que el actual es el mayor calentamiento en 120.000 años, pero la naturaleza parece opinar distinto.
