An interesting quote from prominent philosopher and anthropologist Ernest Gellner. He remarks on the exceptional character of the Islamic religion in the modern world, in comparison to Christianity, Confucianism, and Hinduism.

Gellner says:

Four major literate world civilisations were in existence at the end of the Middle Ages.

Of these, it seems that Islam alone may maintain its pre-industrial faith in the modern world.

The faith of the Christian world has been reinterpreted and adjusted out of all recognition. (Modernist Christian theology, with its· elusive content, asymptotically approaching zero, constitutes by far the best evidence for the secularisation thesis, far more so than any overt 'rationalism':)

Confucianism is repudiated in its homeland, however much it may be possible to trace the survival of its spirit.

Hinduism survives as a folk-religion, neither endorsed nor discouraged by the elite of its land.

Only Islam survives as a serious faith pervading both a folk and a Great Tradition. its Great Tradition is modernisable; and the operation can be presented, not as an innovation or concession to outsiders, bur rather as the continuation and completion of an old dialogue within Islam between the orthodox centre and deviant error, of the old struggle between knowledge and ignorance, political order and anarchy, civilization and barbarism, town and tribe, Holy Law and mere human custom, a unique deity and usurper middlemen of the sacred, to cite the polarities whose linked opposition, sometimes dormant, sometimes virulent, seems perennially latent in Islam.

Jewish atheist sociologist Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) put forth a famous theory of religion which claims that God is simply a symbol for the tribe or ethnic group. So when members of the group worship God or celebrate festivals in His name, they are simply honoring themselves and their shared identity.

Durkheim's theory is highly problematic when applied to religions across the world. However it accurately descibes modern Judaism.

Modern Jews don't believe in God, but they believe in the Jewish people, and they treat their traditional religious fesivals like national holidays, where they commemorate and celebrate their shared ethnic identity.

Jews like Rabbi Dildo and Jewish Atheists like Gad Saad and Sam Harris all are fervent "believers in God," understood as a symbol for the Jewish people.

This headline from Times of Israel understates it.

The law actually bans "pornography and content that depicts sexuality or deviation from gender identity, gender reassignment, and homosexuality."

Hungarian Jews want children to fully access such content.
