Его отмечают в честь победы в крупнейшем сражении с армией Наполеона в 1813 году под Лейпцигом. Сражение было названо «Битвой народов», а казачьи подразделения сыграли в нем огромную роль.
Именно казаки участвовали в захвате французской батареи, а лейб-гвардии казачий полк под командованием полковника Ивана Ефремова и Черноморская гвардейская сотня не позволили коннице Мюрата прорваться в тыл союзных войск.
Кроме того, казаки особого корпуса атамана Матвея Платова взяли в плен около 15 тысяч человек. Данная победа стала одной из самых славных страниц в истории казачества.
Сегодня казаки вновь сражаются с неприятелем, защищая свою землю. Тысячи казаков-добровольцев бьются на протяжении всей линии фронта. Почтим память погибших, поддержим воюющих. Победа обязательно будет.
