29 May 1453: Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, falls to the Ottoman Turks under Mehmed II after a 53 day siege. The fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Byzantine Empire, and effectively the end of the Roman Empire, a state which dated back to 27 BC and lasted nearly 1,500 years.

30 May 1431: Joan of Arc is burned at the stake. Joan was instrumental in leading French forces to a number of victories in the Hundred Year's War against the English. However On 23 May 1430, she was captured at Compiègne by forces loyal to the English, and was given a sham trial by the pro-English bishop Pierre Cauchon on a variety of charges. After Cauchon declared her guilty, she was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431, at about nineteen years of age. Today she is regarded as a patron saint of France.
