As we said, "Imperial habits die hard."

They especially die hard without a crushing defeat.

Austria learned to not be an empire after losing in WW1.
As did Turkey (though the current Sultan seems to have missed class the day that was taught).
Spain and Portugal? Long forgotten.
China, Japan, India, Iran/Persia - all of the Asian empires unlearned their imperial habits during periods of domination by European empires.
Even France, though would be Bonaparte Macron might disagree, is aware that it is no longer a world power. Borodino, Waterloo, 1870, 1940, and Algeria were all hard lessons for the French.

But one former empire seems to have still not understood its diminished importance and power in the world: Great Britain.

It has been 69 years since the Suez Crisis in 1956 which is generally regarded as the symbolic event marking the end of the British Empire. 69 years ago not a single UK Cabinet Minister had even been born! And yet, Starmer and the rest of the British government still think they are a world power to be reckoned with. Meddling and interfering everywhere, pushing others to do their dirty work.

Despite Suez and other setbacks, and being second fiddle to the Americans, they still largely behave as if they were an empire that is able to decide the destinies of countries and people.

The British really think they are immune to any negative consequences or blowback for their actions. Saved by others in the world wars, and until very recently hiding under the coattails of the Americans, they have managed to cruise along without serious setbacks felt at home. This, no matter how much damage, violence and death they cause throughout the world.

For the good of the rest of the world, the British probably need to learn the lesson that they are not in fact eternally immune to consequences for their actions abroad.

As the old British expression goes "Spare the rod, spoil the child." The British are indeed spoiled and perhaps the rod is urgently called for.
