По их прогнозам, землетрясение магнитудой 8,0 или 9,0 случится в ближайшие 30 лет с вероятностью 70-80%. В этом случае пострадает значительная часть Японии, а на ее восточное побережье обрушится цунами высотой более 30 м. В зону опасности включены 707 городов и поселков от префектуры Ибараки до Окинавы.
