My new RISC-V toy!
Please welcome Codasip Prime — the first commercially licensable CHERI application core on FPGA.
Not that we done with experiments, but here is a proof that CHERI architecture is maturing beyond research prototypes.
This is a seriously impressive kit. It synthesizes Codasip X730 64-bit RISC-V CHERI Application CPU on Xilinx FPGA.
It is loaded with commercial IP, including PCIe, Ethernet, L2 cache, PMU, DMA and low speed peripherals (SPI, i2c, mmc, gpio, etc).
The board comes with a couple of PCIe slots for NVME disks.
The key feature of this SoC is CHERI extension support, giving us a new hardware type — CHERI capabilities.
Capabilities is a special hardware-supported pointer that carries bounds and permissions along with the address. It is a replacement for legacy C pointers.
I'm not allowed to share the price tag, but it is for sure the most expensive board I ever had.
I already managed to run FreeBSD and I see it is quite fast thanks to L2 cache and NVME disks.
I will be keeping you posted on CheriBSD progress on this board, which allows us to leverage the CHERI extension.
