Speaking of ‘Gilda’, it is a well-known fact that the nuclear weapon tests conducted by the US at Bikini Atoll in the summer of 1946 were supported by a huge publicity campaign. They were extensively covered in the media, both in the US and around the world, broadcast live over the radio, and, in general, had a reality show vibe. However, some of you may be just as appalled as we were upon learning that the first bomb tested in what is known as Operation Crossroads had been named Gilda as an homage to Rita Hayworth’s stellar career.

As it turns out, Hayworth was also appalled when she heard of the plans to use her name for the bomb. According to Orson Welles, Hayworth’s then-husband, “Rita used to fly into terrible rages all the time, but the angriest was when she found out that they'd put her on the atom bomb. Rita almost went insane, she was so angry. ... She wanted to go to Washington to hold a press conference, but Harry Cohn (Columbia Pictures’ co-founder - MCMT) wouldn't let her because it would be unpatriotic.” Alluding to Hayworth’s bombshell popularity, the bomb was then decorated with the name Gilda stenciled in black as well as Rita Hayworth’s photograph from the June, 1946 issue of Esquire…

Telegram | DID YOU KNOW?

Asked about its stance on disinformation, Telegram spokesperson Remi Vaughn told AFP: "As noted by our CEO, the sheer volume of information being shared on channels makes it extremely difficult to verify, so it's important that users double-check what they read." Groups are also not fully encrypted, end-to-end. This includes private groups. Private groups cannot be seen by other Telegram users, but Telegram itself can see the groups and all of the communications that you have in them. All of the same risks and warnings about channels can be applied to groups. Meanwhile, a completely redesigned attachment menu appears when sending multiple photos or vides. Users can tap "X selected" (X being the number of items) at the top of the panel to preview how the album will look in the chat when it's sent, as well as rearrange or remove selected media. If you initiate a Secret Chat, however, then these communications are end-to-end encrypted and are tied to the device you are using. That means it’s less convenient to access them across multiple platforms, but you are at far less risk of snooping. Back in the day, Secret Chats received some praise from the EFF, but the fact that its standard system isn’t as secure earned it some criticism. If you’re looking for something that is considered more reliable by privacy advocates, then Signal is the EFF’s preferred platform, although that too is not without some caveats. But because group chats and the channel features are not end-to-end encrypted, Galperin said user privacy is potentially under threat.
