Судя по опубликованным данным, ракета взорвалась в шахте, оставив огромный кратер и нанесла значительный ущерб испытательному полигону. Стоит отметить, что «Сармат» не был снаряжен ядерным боезарядом.

Помимо спутникового снимка места неудачных испытаний, в районе взрыва системой мониторинга пожаров FIRMS было зарегистрировано серьезное возгорание.
