من أهم القواعد الكبرى في باب الموازنات بين المصالح والمفاسد، قاعدة (اعتبار النيّة في فعل المفسدة أو ترك المصلحة) كما قال ابن تيمية رحمه الله عند حديثه عن باب الموازنات: (وهذا باب يختلف باختلاف النيات والمقاصد؛ فمن طلب منه ظالمٌ قادر وألزمه مالاً، فتوسط رجلٌ بينهما ليدفع عن المظلوم كثرة الظلم؛ وأخذ منه وأعطى الظالم -مع اختياره أن لا يظلم ودفعه ذلك لو أمكن-: كان محسنا. ولو توسط إعانةً للظالم كان مسيئا. وإنما الغالب في هذه الأشياء: فساد النية والعمل، أما النية فبقصده السلطان والمال، وأما العمل فبفعل المحرمات وبترك الواجبات، لا لأجل التعارض ولا لقصد الأنفع والأصلح) الفتاوى 55/20
فعلى من ابتلي بشيء من الأحوال الضيقة -التي تستوجب تفويت بعض المصالح لتحقيق ما هو أعلى منها، أو ارتكاب بعض المفاسد لدفع ما هو أشد منها-: أن يراجع نيّته ويتقي الله تعالى فيها، فهي محل اعتبار أساس في هذا الباب.
