Путин подписал указ, который воссоздает Московский и Ленинградский военные округа вместо Западного военного округа. О необходимости вновь сформировать их заявлял министр обороны Сергей Шойгу в декабре 2022 года.
В состав Московского военного округа вошли Белгородская, Брянская, Владимирская, Воронежская, Ивановская, Калужская, Костромская, Курская, Липецкая, Московская, Нижегородская, Орловская, Рязанская, Смоленская, Тамбовская, Тверская, Тульская и Ярославская области, а также Москва.
К Ленинградскому военному округу отнесены республики Карелия и Коми, Архангельская, Вологодская, Калининградская, Ленинградская, Мурманская, Новгородская, Псковская области, Санкт-Петербург, а также Ненецкий автономный округ.
Кроме того, в состав Южного военного округа вошли ЛНР, ДНР, Запорожская и Херсонская области.
Ленинградский и Московский военные округа расформировали в 2010 году. На их базе создали Западный военный округ. В декабре 2022 года Сергей Шойгу выступил за воссоздание двух округов в качестве ответных мер на расширение НАТО за счет Финляндии и Швеции
