On St. John the Baptist Day, June 24, 1497, 528 years ago, Venetian explorer John Cabot, under the auspices of Henry VII, spotted Newfoundland. After naming and exploring it, along with other parts of Atlantic Canada, he claimed it in the name of England, sparking the competitive “Age of Discovery” and the beginning of English colonization.
