ظهور تاریخ‌نگاری ملیگرایانه در دوران قاجاریه و مشروطه یکی از مهم‌ترین محورهای شکل‌گیری هویت ملی نوین در ایران معاصر به‌شمار میرود. از زمان ورود ناسیونالیسم به‌عنوان یک ایدئولوژی مدرن به ایران در سدة نوزدهم میلادی، بسیاری از مسائل فرهنگی ایران، از جمله تاریخ‌نگاری و نحوة نگاه به گذشته تحت تأثیر این ایدئولوژی قرار گرفت و به تدریج نوع جدیدی از تاریخ‌نگاری و بازنمود وقایع گذشته در میان منورالفکرهای دوران قاجار و مشروطیت پدید آمد که طی آن تاریخنویسان ایرانی با محور قرار دادن ملی‌گرایی، به بازنویسی تاریخ ایران در قرون گذشته پرداختند و در این میان، به‌ویژه با برجسته کردن تاریخ ایران باستان و قرار دادن این دوره به‌عنوان دوران حیات ملی ایران و ایرانیان، بنیان‌های هویت ملی ایران نوین بر اساس هویت باستانی ایرانیان را پیریزی کردند.
