Call for Artists with Tatar Roots – Project "Polyphonic Memories"

We are looking for an artist with Tatar roots to collaborate on a listening session or lecture performance scheduled for February 16, 2025. The project focuses on historical audio recordings of Tatar prisoners of war from World War I, preserved in the Lautarchiv of Humboldt University in Berlin.

The recordings, made between 1915 and 1918, were captured in German POW camps in Wünsdorf and Weinberge. They feature voices and songs from prisoners of diverse ethnic backgrounds, including many Tatars. Originally created for linguistic and ethnographic research, these materials now serve as a unique testament to the experiences and identities of an often-forgotten group during World War I.

We invite you to engage in an artistic dialogue with these materials, aiming to bring the voices of the past to life and establish connections with their descendants and today’s Tatar community. The session's format is intentionally open, with the central focus on working with the archive's materials.

What we are looking for:

An artist, ideally with a background in (sound) art, who is legally able to work in Germany.
Interest in creative engagement with historical recordings and documents.
Availability to develop and present the project by February 16, 2025.
About the Project: "Polyphonic Memories" is a series of events exploring the history of Tatar prisoners of war during World War I. The Lautarchiv's recordings document their voices, offering unique insights into the lives of an often-overlooked minority. The goal is to foster dialogue, education, and reflection.

This collaboration will be compensated. If you are interested, we look forward to hearing from you!

This ability to mix the public and the private, as well as the ability to use bots to engage with users has proved to be problematic. In early 2021, a database selling phone numbers pulled from Facebook was selling numbers for $20 per lookup. Similarly, security researchers found a network of deepfake bots on the platform that were generating images of people submitted by users to create non-consensual imagery, some of which involved children. On December 23rd, 2020, Pavel Durov posted to his channel that the company would need to start generating revenue. In early 2021, he added that any advertising on the platform would not use user data for targeting, and that it would be focused on “large one-to-many channels.” He pledged that ads would be “non-intrusive” and that most users would simply not notice any change. Russians and Ukrainians are both prolific users of Telegram. They rely on the app for channels that act as newsfeeds, group chats (both public and private), and one-to-one communication. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Telegram has remained an important lifeline for both Russians and Ukrainians, as a way of staying aware of the latest news and keeping in touch with loved ones. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had carried out a similar exercise in 2017 in a matter related to circulation of messages through WhatsApp. The perpetrators use various names to carry out the investment scams. They may also impersonate or clone licensed capital market intermediaries by using the names, logos, credentials, websites and other details of the legitimate entities to promote the illegal schemes.
