Поздним вечером 9 февраля 1945 года на поселок Средняя Медвежка, где проживали шахтёры, работавшие на шахте "Октябрьская" (Сахалинская обл.), обрушилась крупнейшая в истории о. Сахалин лавина. 170 тысяч кубометров снега обрушились с ближайших гор на жилые дома, засыпав 236 спавших человек. В ходе спасательной операции, продолжавшейся три дня, удалось вытащить из-под завалов 105 человек. 131 человек погиб в той трагедии. Все выжившие и потерявшие свое жилище люди были перевезены в пос. Октябрьский, где вскоре им было дано новое жилье.

О трагедии первым написал известный сахалинский краевед Константин Гапоненко в своей статье "Гибель Средней Медвежки".
