Акция имеет свою предысторию. В Волгограде на площади Павших борцов растёт дерево, ставшее живым участником и свидетелем ожесточённых боёв Сталинградской битвы.
Весной 1943 года маленький тополь нашли при разборе обломков, а в 2013-м специалисты прорастили его почки. За прошедшие годы саженцы легендарного тополя появился во многих городах нашей страны.
