Юридически Сечь была ликвидирована императрицей Екатериной II Указом от 3 (14) августа 1775 года, а Петр Иванович в следующем году, в возрасте 85 лет, был определен в келью Соловецкого монастыря, в которой провел 25 лет. Освобожденный в 1801 году, он пожелал остаться в монастыре, и умер там в возрасте 112 лет в 1803 году...
