23 мая 1996 г. за отказ снять крест мученически отдал свою жизнь русский солдат Евгений Родионов. Вместе с ним после 100 дней пыток были убиты ещё трое солдат Российской армии - Андрей Трусов, Игорь Яковлев и Александр Железнов.
Родился Евгений тоже 23 мая (в 1977 г.) В момент мученической кончины ему было ровно 19 лет.
В убийстве признался Руслан Хайхороев. В присутствии иностранного представителя ОБСЕ он рассказал: «…У него был выбор, чтобы остаться в живых. Он мог бы веру сменить, но он не захотел с себя креста снимать».
