NEW: Over 70,000 newly leaked photos reveal torture in Assad's prisons

A trove of more than 70,000 newly leaked photos reveal severe abuses and torture inside Syrian prisons under the Assad regime, German public broadcaster NDR reported.

The images, mostly taken between 2015 and 2024, reportedly show 10,212 dead bodies, predominantly men, but also women, children, and at least one baby.

According to NDR, many of the bodies show clear signs of torture, malnutrition and mistreatment.

The photos were leaked by a former member of the military who was employed in the evidence preservation department of the military police in Damascus.

NEW: Quran Desecrated at St James's Hospital in Leeds

A copy of the Holy Quran was desecrated last weekend at the Faith Centre in St James's Hospital in Leeds. The Quran was burnt and put down the toilet.

Police are investigating reports a Quran was desecrated in a religiously-aggravated incident of criminal damage at St James's Hospital in Leeds.

In an email to staff seen by the BBC, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust CEO Brendan Brown said the Muslim holy book and a framed chapter of the text had been damaged at the Faith Centre in Bexley Wing.

Mr Brown said the suspected hate incident was "worrying and completely unacceptable".

West Yorkshire Police said the incident took place on Saturday, adding: "We are aware of the impact crimes of this nature can have within our communities and will be working with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to follow up all available lines of inquiry."

Assad’s Moscow Exiles Try to Reignite Syria’s Coast

Two of Bashar al-Assad’s closest former allies — ex–military intelligence chief Kamal Hassan and billionaire cousin Rami Makhlouf — are running competing efforts from Moscow to raise Alawite militias and spark uprisings along Syria’s coast.

Both men, bitter over the loss of Assad’s regime after its fall in December 2024, are investing millions of dollars to recruit tens of thousands of fighters in Syria and Lebanon.

They are also vying for control of 14 underground, arms-filled command rooms built during Assad’s final months.

Makhlouf, who embraces a messianic image and claims divine purpose, says he has 54,000 fighters; Hassan, who frames himself as the community’s defender, claims 12,000.

In reality, fighters often accept money from both sides, salaries are tiny, and no forces have mobilized.

Russia, once Assad’s main backer, has offered neither man real support.

With Alawites deeply divided, Russia uninterested, Makhlouf reportedly short on cash, and underground arms depots sitting unused, a large-scale uprising remains unlikely — at least for now.

Israeli soldier commits suicide after partaking in Gaza Genocide

Lithuanian-Israeli soldier Tomas Adzgauskas, who took part in the genocide in Gaza, committed suicide after posting a message on social media saying, “I did things that cannot be forgiven.”

“October 7, the date that ruined my life and destroyed everything I was.

I can’t anymore, I am ruin and devastation… I did things that cannot be forgiven, and I can’t live with it anymore. No one understands me anyway.

There is a demon inside me that has been chasing me since 7.10. Please forget me and remember the Tomas who was an officer and a sniper commander.

That Tomas died on the 7th; I am only a soul searching for peace. For two years now I haven’t been able to live with myself.”

NEW: Gaza mediators Egypt and Qatar and six other Muslim-majority countries say they’re worried about Israel stating it will open a crucial crossing for Palestinians to exit the Strip but not return.

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates “expressed their deep concern regarding the statements issued by the Israeli side concerning the opening of the Rafah crossing in one direction with the aim of transferring residents of the Gaza Strip to” Egypt, a joint statement said.
