Армия была создана 26 июня 1918 года решением парламента Азербайджанской Демократической Республики в Гяндже. После ее упразднения в 1920 году Вооруженные силы были восстановлены 9 октября 1991 года — уже в независимом Азербайджане.
В состав ВС входят сухопутные войска, военно-воздушные силы и силы противовоздушной обороны, а также военно-морские силы.
Следует отметить, что начиная с 26 июня четыре дня подряд будут нерабочими: граждане будут отдыхать 26, 27, 28 и 29 июня.
