ولتر (Voltaire) یکی از مهم‌ترین فیلسوفان و نویسندگان فرانسوی در عصر روشنگری بود که از ۲۱ نوامبر ۱۶۹۴ تا ۳۰ مه ۱۷۷۸ زندگی کرد. او به دلیل نقدهای تند و هوشمندانه‌اش علیه کلیسای کاتولیک و دفاع از آزادی مذهب، آزادی بیان و جدایی دین از سیاست شهرت دارد. ولتر با شجاعت نظرات خود را به‌صراحت بیان می‌کرد و به دلیل اندیشه‌های پیشرو و تأثیرگذار خود بر فضای فکری و فرهنگی آن زمان و حتی دوران پس از آن، همچنان به‌عنوان یکی از برجسته‌ترین چهره‌های تاریخ فلسفه و ادبیات شناخته می‌شود.
