По словам заместителя директора ИПЯТ НИЯУ МИФИ, доктора физико-математических наук Игоря Коновалова, суть рассмотренной схемы заключается в том, что из отработанного уранового топлива АЭС в качестве промежуточной ступени будут извлекаться изотопы америция или нептуния, которые в настоящее время рассматриваются как радиоактивные отходы, и из будет нарабатываться изотоп плутоний-238.
