Собрание сочинений Горбатова — четыре тома, три из них — о войне. Среди его произведений времен Великой Отечественной выделяется сборник рассказов «Письма товарищу». Стиль прост — это множество мелких зарисовок, оформленных в виде писем, которые герой шлет друзьям. Книжку высоко оценил Симонов и полюбили бойцы. Некоторые «письма» довольно просты и однообразны, часто заканчиваются одинаково: «Бей, без пощады бей, без жалости бей врага!». Но постепенно они становятся все глубже и мощнее.
