حسین گل‌گلاب، گیاه‌شناس، ادیب، نویسنده، شاعر، مترجم و نوازنده و موسیقی‌دان و عکاس بود. علاوه بر همه‌ی این‌ها او در دانشگاه نیز تدریس می‌کرد. او در ۱۲۷۴ در تهران به دنیا آمد. پدرش ابوتراب‌خان که به مهدی مصورالملک شهره بود از نقاشان و عکاسان بنام عهد قاجار بود. او تحصیلات را در مدرسه علمیه و دارالفنون سپری کرد. گل‌گلاب با کمک کلنل کاظم وزیری و علی‌نقی‌خان وزیری به موسیقی رو آورد.
