The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) condemns the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) — the world’s largest labor organization with over 200 million members in 163 countries — has issued an urgent statement condemning the Iranian Supreme Court’s confirmation of the death sentence against imprisoned labor activist Sharifeh Mohammadi.

The ITUC stressed that:
🔹 Sharifeh Mohammadi was falsely charged with “armed rebellion against the state”, despite her peaceful activism in defense of labor and women’s rights.
🔹 In October 2024, the Supreme Court itself had overturned her initial death sentence due to serious legal flaws, yet in February 2025, a different chamber reinstated the sentence through a grossly unfair process.
🔹 Since her arrest on December 5, 2023, Sharifeh has reportedly been subjected to torture, solitary confinement, and denial of fair trial rights.

The ITUC warned that this decision blatantly violates Iran’s obligations under ILO conventions and urged the international community to press for the immediate and unconditional release of Sharifeh Mohammadi.

Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi:
We will not remain silent in the face of this inhumane sentence. Until Sharifeh is free, our call will be echoed louder in every international forum.

Given the pro-privacy stance of the platform, it’s taken as a given that it’ll be used for a number of reasons, not all of them good. And Telegram has been attached to a fair few scandals related to terrorism, sexual exploitation and crime. Back in 2015, Vox described Telegram as “ISIS’ app of choice,” saying that the platform’s real use is the ability to use channels to distribute material to large groups at once. Telegram has acted to remove public channels affiliated with terrorism, but Pavel Durov reiterated that he had no business snooping on private conversations. In 2018, Russia banned Telegram although it reversed the prohibition two years later. Ukrainian forces have since put up a strong resistance to the Russian troops amid the war that has left hundreds of Ukrainian civilians, including children, dead, according to the United Nations. Ukrainian and international officials have accused Russia of targeting civilian populations with shelling and bombardments. Andrey, a Russian entrepreneur living in Brazil who, fearing retaliation, asked that NPR not use his last name, said Telegram has become one of the few places Russians can access independent news about the war. In February 2014, the Ukrainian people ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, prompting Russia to invade and annex the Crimean peninsula. By the start of April, Pavel Durov had given his notice, with TechCrunch saying at the time that the CEO had resisted pressure to suppress pages criticizing the Russian government.
