Last Update:
I'm tentatively hopeful that there's gonna be some redeeming qualities. but homestuck is the type of thing that could never be adapted in this way. it's way too dependent on its native medium.
first of all, homestuck is 8000+ pages. sure, they could make a series to rival one piece in length, but we all know that's not gonna happen. instead, they're gonna cut out a shit ton of story to make way for the things people "want" to see - like KARKAT, who they already have a voice actor lined up for despite the trolls not being introduced until HALFWAY THROUGH THE STORY. another clue that gives me the feeling it's gonna be paced really weird is the fact that a ton of the trailer seems to focus on john strifing with his dad? which makes me feel like they have a huge over-animated strife scene that is really fun, but takes up so much time that they're gonna end up having to rush past everything else.
homestuck is insanely dense, with both character moments but also plot, and I'm not confident in vivziepop's ability to balance them well. going back to the story not fitting into a purely visual medium, by god there's so many walls of text in homestuck that are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT but also, basically nothing is happening visually in the comic. in a purely visual medium, how do you make that work? answer: you don't, you just skip over all those important monologues and characterization and worldbuilding.
another thing I'm concerned about is the absolute flanderization of the characters. we already know karkat's gonna be involved, which makes it seem like their priority is showing people what they want, aka "look it's your blorbo, they're doing the characteristic thing they do!!" and then that's ALL they do.
