در قرن هفدهم عده‌ای از فلاسفه، خصوصاً فلاسفه انگلیسی، مکتب تجربه‌گرایی(Empiricism) را براه انداختند. طبق این مکتب منشاء دانش ما درباره جهان فیزیکی "تجارب حسی" است و علم صرفاً محصول حواس است و امور غیر محسوس، از جمله مسائل متافیزیکی که امور عقلی هستند، فاقد اعتبارند. این مکتب با تاکید روی تجربه در مقابل تفکر(خرد) و از طریق غیرقابل تحقیق شمردن مسائل متافیزیکی مهمترین ضربه را در قرون جدید بر متافیزیک وارد آوردند.
در قرن بیستم، تجربه‌گرایی به صورت تزی درباره معنا درآمد و مدعی این شد که یک مفهوم یا قضیه وقتی معنا دارد که قواعدی متضمن تجربه حسی برای تحقیق با کاربرد آن ارائه شود. مکاتب #پوزیتیویسم (Positivism)، #عملیات‌گرایی (Operationalism)، پراگماتیسم یا #عملگرایی (Pragmatism) و امثال آنها در واقع تجلیات و تعابیر مختلفی از مکتب تجربه‌گرایی به شمار می‌روند. همگی این مکاتب در اصالت دادن به تجربه و بی‌حاصل شمردن و یا بی‌معنی شمردن "متافیزیک" اتفاق نظر دارند و غالب آنها کار فلسفه را صرفاً "تحلیل زبان و منطق علم" می‌دانند.
