وقصّة المثل فيما حُكي أنّ الأضبط بن قُرَيع كان يرى من قومه _وهو سيّدهم_ جفاءً له وبغياً عليه، وتنقّصاً من قيمته وقدره

ففارقهم وسار بأهله حتّى نزل بقوم آخرين من العرب، فإذا هم يفعلون بأشرافهم كما كان يفعل به قومه من التّنقّص له والبغي عليه، فارتحل عنهم، وحلّ في ديار قوم آخرين، فإذا هم كسابقيهم، فلمّا رأى ذلك انصرف عنهم،
وقال: ما أرى النّاس إلّا قريباً بعضهم من بعض.
ثمّ عاد إلى قومه وقال: بكلّ وادٍ بنو سعد.
ومثله قولهم: بكلّ وادٍ أثر من ثعلبة.
يُضرَب مثلاً في تشابه أخلاق النّاس واستواء القوم في الشّرّ.
