Last Update:
DefSec Hegseth has begun tightening standards in the military, his DoD putting out attractive advertising and tough words, a shift some worry implies "we're going to war". Historical trends, the administration's foreign policy efforts, and Trump's veritable 'peace through strength' motto tells me the opposite.
A country whose military projects power is far less at risk of war than one that operates with weakness. Recruitment spiked under Trump's first term, during which no new wars started and quite a few old wars ended. Recruitment has hit a 15 yr high under Trump's second term, and we're seeing wars de-escalate, conflicts dealt with. Input-output.
Biden, Bush, Clinton, and Obama had over a dozen desert wars when recruitment was declining and our image was worsening. Before WW1 and WW2, the US military filled itself with unintelligent cannon fodder immigrants. Higher standards can deter unnecessary fights, and we'd better ensure the benefits and training goes to good hands, not foreign or dullard ones.
