На корабле "Восток-1" он облетел Землю на высоте 302 километра со скоростью около 28 тысяч километров в час. Так была открыта новая - космическая эра человечества.
В память об этом историческом событии, в память о триумфе советской науки и техники, в 1962 году в СССР и был учреждён День космонавтики.
Позже, в 2011 году, Генеральная Ассамблея ООН объявила 12 апреля Международным днем полета человека в космос.
