Музей открыт в 1990 году на базе гимназии №51 по инициативе трех гомельчан – ветерана вооруженных конфликтов в Египте Юрия Политова и участников боевых действий в Афганистане Сергея Чайкуна и Сергея Евмененко. Первые двое работали в администрации тогда еще школы и договорились о том, что в экспозиции будут отражены все горячие точки, где воевали советские призывники.
