عن رجل من أهل الشام، عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب (من صغار التابعين، ٥٣ هـ - ١٢٨ هـ) قال:
«من فتنة العالم، أن يكون الكلام أحب إليه من الاستماع، وإن وجد من يكفيه، فإن في الاستماع سلامة، وزيادة في العلم. والمستمع شريك المتكلم في الكلام، إلا من عصم الله. ترمق وتزين، وزيادة ونقصان».
