Федор Шехтель - выдающийся архитектор, признанный во всем мире, - оставил великое наследие и Нижнему Новгороду. Например, Торговый дом (ныне - здание академии «Маяк» на Нижневолжской) и здание банка Рукавишникова (Рождественская, 23), городской концертный зал (сейчас - «Орленок» на Большой Покровской). Во времена выставки 1896 года он создавал витрины павильонов, оформлял город перед визитом императора.

К 165-летию зодчего в НГХМ|Русское искусство открыли выставку, для которой собрали чертежи невоплощенного проекта Шехтеля. В нашем фонде сохранен на 53 листах эскиз здания Нижегородского губернского земского музея - его должны были возвести на Верхневолжской (в том месте, где сейчас набережная пересекается с улицей Нестерова). Хотим реализовать этот великий проект, по эскизам для начала нужно будет заказать проектную документацию и, если все сложится, определяться с местом (где изначально планировалось - уже возвести не получится).
