Islamic civilization stands unique because religion shaped its core foundation. In Michael Hart's book "The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History", he selected Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) as history's most influential figure. When asked why he, as a Christian, ranked Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) above Jesus, Hart explained:
"He was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular levels. Of humble origins, Muhammad founded and promulgated one of the world’s great religions, and became an immensely effective political leader"

Historical figures like Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and Darius built civilizations without establishing religions.

This distinction highlights a crucial point: Islamic historical documentation emerged primarily to preserve religious teachings rather than glorify rulers, states, or civilizations.

إن أحد المزايا الموجودة في الأمة الإسلامية، والفرائد التي تفردت بها، هو أن الدين هو الذي صنع الحضارة. فكتاب مايكل هارت الذي عنوانه "الخالدون مائة: أعظم شخصية تأثيرًا في التاريخ"، كان يقول إنه اختار سيدنا محمدًا - صلى الله عليه وسلم - رقم واحد كأعظم شخصية مؤثرة في التاريخ. لماذا يا مايكل؟ يقول: "حتى الناس سيسألونني، وباعتبار أنني مسيحي، كيف اخترت محمدًا وقدمته على عيسى؟" فيقول: "لأن محمدًا هو الشخص الوحيد في التاريخ الذي نجح نجاحًا مطلقًا على المستويين الديني والدنيوي. فعلى المستوى الديني، محمد مؤسس دين عظيم، وعلى المستوى الدنيوي، محمد مؤسس دولة وحضارة عظيمة".

فرجل مثل الإسكندر المقدوني، أو جنكيز خان، أو دارا، وغيرهم من أبطال التاريخ، أقاموا حضارات لكنهم لم يؤسسوا أدياناً. ولماذا أذكر هذا الكلام؟ لأقول إن التاريخ الإسلامي أحد فرائده المميزة والمهمة أنه نشأ للحفاظ على الدين، وليس لتمجيد الدولة ولا لتمجيد الحكام ولا لخدمة الحضارة.
