The ancient rock-hewn churches of #Lalibela in Ethiopia are deteriorating after centuries of heavy rain.

Cracks, dampness and erosion worsen each rainy season, despite earlier protection efforts.

Temporary canopies installed 17 years ago shield five churches but are widely criticised as unsightly.

Local clergy warn that damage is accelerating, with rocks dropping and cracks widening yearly.

Built in the 12th century under King Lalibela, the site remains a centre of worship and pilgrimage.

The Ethiopian government and #UNESCO now plan one giant canopy to safeguard all 11 churches.

An international architectural competition will be launched to design a solution that blends with the landscape.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Lalibela in northeastern Ethiopia.

Official government accounts have also spread fake fact checks. An official Twitter account for the Russia diplomatic mission in Geneva shared a fake debunking video claiming without evidence that "Western and Ukrainian media are creating thousands of fake news on Russia every day." The video, which has amassed almost 30,000 views, offered a "how-to" spot misinformation. The S&P 500 fell 1.3% to 4,204.36, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.7% to 32,943.33. The Dow posted a fifth straight weekly loss — its longest losing streak since 2019. The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 2.2% to 12,843.81. Though all three indexes opened in the green, stocks took a turn after a new report showed U.S. consumer sentiment deteriorated more than expected in early March as consumers' inflation expectations soared to the highest since 1981. In a statement, the regulator said the search and seizure operation was carried out against seven individuals and one corporate entity at multiple locations in Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar in Gujarat, Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Mumbai. Messages are not fully encrypted by default. That means the company could, in theory, access the content of the messages, or be forced to hand over the data at the request of a government. Overall, extreme levels of fear in the market seems to have morphed into something more resembling concern. For example, the Cboe Volatility Index fell from its 2022 peak of 36, which it hit Monday, to around 30 on Friday, a sign of easing tensions. Meanwhile, while the price of WTI crude oil slipped from Sunday’s multiyear high $130 of barrel to $109 a pop. Markets have been expecting heavy restrictions on Russian oil, some of which the U.S. has already imposed, and that would reduce the global supply and bring about even more burdensome inflation.
