The ancient rock-hewn churches of #Lalibela in Ethiopia are deteriorating after centuries of heavy rain.

Cracks, dampness and erosion worsen each rainy season, despite earlier protection efforts.

Temporary canopies installed 17 years ago shield five churches but are widely criticised as unsightly.

Local clergy warn that damage is accelerating, with rocks dropping and cracks widening yearly.

Built in the 12th century under King Lalibela, the site remains a centre of worship and pilgrimage.

The Ethiopian government and #UNESCO now plan one giant canopy to safeguard all 11 churches.

An international architectural competition will be launched to design a solution that blends with the landscape.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Lalibela in northeastern Ethiopia.

Telegram | DID YOU KNOW?

Date: |

Telegram does offer end-to-end encrypted communications through Secret Chats, but this is not the default setting. Standard conversations use the MTProto method, enabling server-client encryption but with them stored on the server for ease-of-access. This makes using Telegram across multiple devices simple, but also means that the regular Telegram chats you’re having with folks are not as secure as you may believe. Messages are not fully encrypted by default. That means the company could, in theory, access the content of the messages, or be forced to hand over the data at the request of a government. If you initiate a Secret Chat, however, then these communications are end-to-end encrypted and are tied to the device you are using. That means it’s less convenient to access them across multiple platforms, but you are at far less risk of snooping. Back in the day, Secret Chats received some praise from the EFF, but the fact that its standard system isn’t as secure earned it some criticism. If you’re looking for something that is considered more reliable by privacy advocates, then Signal is the EFF’s preferred platform, although that too is not without some caveats. Meanwhile, a completely redesigned attachment menu appears when sending multiple photos or vides. Users can tap "X selected" (X being the number of items) at the top of the panel to preview how the album will look in the chat when it's sent, as well as rearrange or remove selected media. On Telegram’s website, it says that Pavel Durov “supports Telegram financially and ideologically while Nikolai (Duvov)’s input is technological.” Currently, the Telegram team is based in Dubai, having moved around from Berlin, London and Singapore after departing Russia. Meanwhile, the company which owns Telegram is registered in the British Virgin Islands.
