Упоминание о заболевании встречается в Ветхом Завете, а в 503 году во Франции был издан указ, предписывающий больным проказой жить в изолированном учреждении – лепрозории. В 1874 году норвежский ученый Г. А. Гансен открыл возбудитель проказы – микобактерии лепры (Mycobacterium leprae).
