Во время боя, когда по танку попадали, от брони изнутри отлетали горячие стальные осколки – что, конечно, представляло большую угрозу для экипажа (и без того уже обалдевшего от жуткой жары и отсутствия вентиляции).
Вот поэтому и понадобилась маска.
