شیخ «خورشید هرکی» نیز با تهدید نیروهای پیشمرگه گفته که اگر نیروهایشان را در اسرع وقت عقب نکِشند، پالایشگاه‌های نفت کرکوک و لاناز را منفجر خواهد کرد.
«خورشید هرکی»، که پیش‌تر عضو ارشد حزب دموکرات کردستان بوده، اکنون به یکی از مخالفان سرسخت مسعود بارزانی تبدیل شده و خواستار خیزش علیه دولت اقلیم کردستان شده است. برخی منابع این درگیری را به‌عنوان یک شورش مسلحانه علیه حاکمیت بارزانی توصیف کرده‌اند.
