В 1929 году Горький побывал в Соловецком лагере особого назначения.
Из воспоминаний академика Д.С. Лихачева, в 1929 году – заключенного Соловецкого лагеря:
«На Соловках Горький остался один на один с мальчиком лет четырнадцати, вызвавшимся рассказать Горькому всю правду про пытки, которым подвергались заключенные. С мальчиком Горький оставался не менее сорока минут. Наконец Горький вышел из барака и плакал на виду у всех, ничуть не скрываясь. Толпа заключенных ликовала: «Горький про все узнал. Мальчик ему все рассказал!».
После возвращения Горький опубликовал очерк «Соловки», в котором восторженно отзывался о Соловецком лагере, писал, что там учат грамоте и труду. «Мне кажется — вывод ясен: необходимы такие лагеря, как Соловки. Именно этим путём государство быстро достигнет одной из своих целей: уничтожить тюрьмы».
После отъезда Горького мальчика больше никто никогда не видел.
