Last Update:
Mightiest Alone
by Caleb Ó Muireadhaigh
A new century had just begun but the Earls had fallen low
They shook the hands at Mellifont and soon they fled their home
Our people gazed at empty thrones: "Are the nobles gone now and for all time?"
No! Aristocracy is inborn in our race, whether in home or foreign clime
With a belief in noble Gaelic blood, Féilim raised the sword
To smite invading planters and expel the foreign horde
For God, King and Country the Gael did wage his war
And for longer than a decade his blood pervade and spilled galore
At the behest of foreign Parliamentarians, the Gael had fall upon his back
But with belief in Christ, he rose again, and readied for attack
Then came the foreign Dutchman, paid by those who spit upon the cross
Enemies not just of dear Ireland, but of Europe, and of God
Near three years the war did rage, till the Wild Geese spread their wings and flew
The Gael did look around, consolidate, and begin the struggle all anew
Famine struck our brothers yonder sea, and sailed they to our shores
Our men flocked all over Europe and we fought in Stuart wars
And when the Jacobites did rise in the year one seven forty five
Gideon cursed their faith and honour, and he funded their demise
Then came our valiant heroes, pikemen ready for to die
And die they did unceasing, as the bodies piled on high
As Tone took his blade and slit his throat, Dwyer manned the mountains
Emmet was soon beheaded and blood did flow down as a fountain
No one will ever save us, only we can end our peoples' pouring tears
The Young Movement rose and failed, then reinforced, and tried again in nineteen years
"If not us, then who?" one asked, and Griffith answered: "Ourselves Alone!"
Through the will of our own people we will resurrect the Gaelic throne
It is deep within our memory, unconscious within our souls
The true nobility of Éire know that we are Mightiest Alone
And with that all in mind, the Seven signed the Proclamation
At Easter time to tame the tide of foreign domination
Sixteen heroes executed, in the future thousands more will die
Brother will kill brother and father kill his own dear child
And in '69 our heroes raised the rifle, and fought for 30 years
But subversion was put in place by men of foreign mindset, who did tout to British ears
And now my dear young Gaelic brethren, fight tooth, nail, and bone
Flock to your family through Clann Éireann, for we are Mightiest Alone
